Book Publishing Help and Tips About Publishing Fiction!

Book publishing help and tips about publishing fiction is available right here at Write and Publish Ficiton. This topic discusses the things you should be aware of before you sign a contract with a publisher. It also contains some lessons learned and some of the things you should know before you decide which book publishing route to take.

First, I'd like to tell you a few things you should look for in book publishers before choosing which one you want to publish your book. Some are good and some are bad, and you obviously want to avoid the bad, even if they are the only one to accept your proposal.

1.First and foremost with book publishing help, attempt to obtain an agent to represent you and your literary work. They are called Literary Agents and can by found online using Google.com search and the keyword phrase "literary agents". You can try it below in my custom search bar.

They represent you as an author and pitch your fiction work toward publishers. They field the rejections so you don't have to and they perform the search for the best publisher for your books. Generally, agents don't get paid until they find you a publisher, so if they want money up front, find another one.

2. The next book publishing help topic is to attempt to contact desired book publishers via their proper contact information on their website or advertised listing. If they have email, send then a question or two about the services they provide. If they have a phone number, call them.

Make sure that a publisher is a legitimate company before doing any kind of business with them. If you have heard of the company before, then they are most likely legitimate. If you haven't heard of them, check them out more thoroughly before doing any business with them.

3. Look at some of the other books the prospective publishers have published in the past. Search for some of the books via other means such as major search engines and see where they are selling them, their average price, and if available, how many of each book has sold. This can give you an idea of how well your book may sell.

4. Book publishing help continues with checking to see if the book publishers use print on demand (if they do, they outsource which will cost you more money) or if they provide the printing services in-house (which means they print the books for you).

In-house print on demand is okay, but if you have to buy a bulk amount of books when you first agree to a printing, you will incur several thousands of dollars in initial costs that you probably don't have (or that will come out of your royalties) and you will have to find a place to store all of the books in the meantime before you actually get them in stores or sell them outright.

A word to the wise: 90 percent of all published authors never sell more than 500 copies of their books and only about 10 books per year of all published books sell more than a million copies. So don't go jumping the gun and buying 50,000 copies of your book. That is just a waste of money.

5. Check with the publishers on how much they charge for their services. This is a very important point with book publishing help because you probably don't have a lot of money to throw around when you are first starting out. Publishing is a very inexpensive service and shouldn't cost you more than a thousand dollars (and this is on the high end price for low end publishers). The major publishers out there generally pay you an advance on your sales (a guess of how many books you will sell in the first year). If you are going to have someone else publish your work, this is the best way because you don't have to pay any upfront fees. Other costs may show up for other related services, but the publishing will be calculated in with the advance.

An advance is just a temporary loan that is paid back with each purchase of your book. You will not see any earnings from your book until after the advance is paid in full. A publisher most likely won't give you an advance unless they are certain your book sales are going to exceed the expectations of the advance they give you. And there is usually a specific term when this advance must be paid back. If you don't reach this goal, you must come up with the money to pay it back on your own.

6. Check with the Better Business Bureau for the publishers that you are interested in and see if they are listed and in good standing. If there are any major problems with that company, it will definitely show up.

With all of those book publishing help considerations out of the way, you are now hopefully ready to find fiction book publishers to publish your book. If you are still a little leery about pursuing the publishing route, seek more book publishing help from another area of my website.
